On my PC I was able to double click to edit within a cell w/out having to use the formula bar. I suspect there could be a plist corruption happening here. Pointless to chase symptoms if the updates haven't been applied. The first thing to determine is that Office is fully updated (12.2.4).
May be isolated to a specific file - have you tried in other workbooks? Neither the dbl-clk nor Control+U have any flaws within the program - theyīoth work as advertised - so the problem must be local to your system.
